What Can a Recruiter Learn From Breaking Bad

What Can a Recruiter Learn From Breaking Bad At first glance, the story of a mild-mannered  chemistry teachers transformation into a crystal-meth-producing criminal genius seems to have  little application in the world of recruitment. Frankly, most of our clients have little interest in  advanced chemistry, the criminal underworld or the business model of meth distribution â€" although  many will probably be massive fans of the show itself, which makes for enjoyable potential debate  during those post-work drinks. But as with most things in life, a little scrape under the blue-powder-coated surface of Breaking Bad  shows that its possible to find some useful lessons from our favourite TV show, with life imitating  art in a number of surprising ways: Never stop learning: If Mr White had spent his high-school chemistry lessons staring out of the windows (as many of  us no doubt did), he would never had gained the knowledge he eventually needed to become a  first-class crystal meth producer â€" a process requiring hugely complex and dangerous chemical  procedures. But knowing how to make the best product, meant his product would sell! Keep learning. Solve problems by thinking creatively: Mr White’s initial problem was to find money to pay for his treatment and to keep his loved ones  cared for after he was gone. He came up with an incredibly creative solution by analysing the facts  and items at his disposal. If you can find creative solutions for your clients and candidates problems or issues, they will view  you much more as a trusted advisor rather than just another recruiter. Additional examples of his creative problem solving include a higher level of throughput and  better distribution channels, which lead him to find a distributor, and then lead him to find a more  professional distributor. Which leads me on to my next point… Work with professionals: Walter found working with his first distributor, Tuco, far too risky and stressful. So he set out to find  a more professional distribution set up. If you are working with unprofessional clients, or candidates,  they will make you look unprofessional by association, so make sure you focus on high quality  people and relationships this will reduce the risk of anything going wrong, or situations falling apart  by people in your process who are ‘rogue elements’. In short, remove as much risk as possible from  your service. Find your area of speciality: Equally, by becoming a meth producer supreme, Mr White and, over time, his partner Jesse carved  out a highly profitable niche for themselves in a high-value growth market. This lesson definitely  translates for recruiters. By becoming a specialist in a niche or high-growth area, a recruiter can  position himself or herself perfectly for a successful career trajectory. The trick is to become  extremely competent and well regarded in that particular discipline so that people automatically go  to you by default, allowing you to build up your business profitably and sustainably. READ MORE:  How To  Recruit  for  Niche  Positions Build a better mousetrap: All great business minds know that if you offer a superior product with a clearly defined advantage,  the world will come calling in droves. Whether you are peddling illegal crystal meth (and we hope  that the average recruiter isnt doing this) or looking to win new clients in your recruitment field,  make sure you can define your product and sell it accordingly and that you offer something that  sets you apart from your competition. It might be a feature of your service offer, or it might be an  outstanding service or a particular area of knowledge or expertise in an emerging field. Define it,  market it and own it. Keep your business transport in good order: Remember the episode in which Mr White and Jesse almost die in the desert, trapped in their  broken-down RV? Such situations are fortunately rare for the average UK recruiter, but the  underlying principle still remains keep your business transport clean, smart and in good working  order. Dont bring your company car to breaking point. Treat it and everything else around you with  respect. The world will treat you with respect back. Plus, if people see you driving a beaten up, dirty  vehicle, hey will assume you are sloppy in all your habits, not the impression you want to make. Something not working? Reinvent yourself! Mild-mannered Walter White bore little resemblance to the terrifying Heisenberg who later  emerged. And, essentially, this persona was created with a pork-pie hat and a mean beard. These  two attributes might translate poorly into a recruitment scenario, but theres no doubt that a smart  and professional visual identity will take you far. Dress smartly, always look well presented and  cultivate a sense of style. Extend your personal brand across everything that you do, from your clean  and attractive business card to your professional mobile-phone greeting and that all-important first  handshake. Finish what you start: A crucial lesson of Breaking Bad is that Walt never leaves loose ends untied. This running theme  meant that the show was consistently good, and the finale exceptional. Jesse also learns this  attribute increasingly over time. Their ability to deliver means that they get the job done and  never leave their customer, or their violent, psychopathic and slave-driving distributor, Gus, short. Whether or not your recruitment boss shares similar characteristics to Gus, commit to being the  person who always delivers for your clients, your colleagues and your wider stakeholders. Follow your path: Walter White learned how to pursue his bliss. His decisions were increasingly questionable on a  moral scale, but the transformation of his character from weak and unhappy nobody to someone  with power, decisiveness and bold approach was truly fascinating to behold. The executives of AMC  followed a similarly bold path when commissioning this ground-breaking show, and the gamble  paid off, with many believing it to be one of the finest dramas ever aired. Bear this in mind as you  progress your career, and stay true to your dreams. Unless, of course, they involve making crystal  meth or becoming the cop brother-in-law of the man already making it. Your family: Even when Walt truly loses the way, he keeps his family central. In a sense, Jesse becomes part of  his extended family, proving that people dont need to be related to us to have a central role in  our lives. As recruiters we need something more than money to work for. Whether that is family,  friends, colleagues or community or all of these, have a bigger purpose and be accountable to more  people than just yourself and your bank balance. Your life will be richer for it. Author:  Alison Mulligan is Senior Account Manager at Maximus IT with 16 years experience in recruitment.

LinkedIn Takes Skills Endorsements Seriously for Search Results

LinkedIn Takes Skills Endorsements Seriously for Search Results Two weeks ago I wrote a post noting that using a keyword, say 116 times, in your LinkedIn profile can push you to the top of a first level connections search results for that keyword. But what about LinkedIn Skills Endorsements, do they help?LinkedIn SEO ResearchI tested skills keyword as follows:How many times the keyword appears on the profile. The number of endorsements the keyword has in the LinkedIn Skills section. The number of recommendations the person has received. The table below shows data for the profiles that came up in the top nine positions in search results for my test keyword.EndorsementsAs you can see, the person in the first position used my keyword 116 times in her profile. But look at the person who came up in position 6. He only used my keyword five times. Slacker. I wonder  how he made it to page one.Do you think it had anything to do with his 625 endorsements for my keyword? I do.First Level ConnectionsAll of my page one results were people who are first level co nnections. So, if you want to come up on an early page of someones search results, its good to be a first level connection.Keyword StuffingYou only had to stuff my keyword into your profile an average of 73 times to get to page one.BTW, I wrote this post in 2013. In my latest 2017 research, Ive found that keyword stuffing doesnt work nearly as well as it did in 2013.If you A/B test it, you will find that after you stuff a keyword so many times, you get diminishing marginal returns. Thank goodness!RecommendationsAnd recommendations, those more meaningful attestations of your awesomeness, it only took an average of 36 of those to get to page one.LinkedIn SEO is a Numbers  GameLike it or not, getting yourself to a prominent place in LinkedIn search results appears to be mostly a numbers game. I say mostly because positions 4 and 5 somehow made it onto page one without much in the way of numbers. If you want to drive traffic to your profile via your position in LinkedIn search results, i t looks as though its smart to grab every meaningful and meaningless endorsement you can.Note this argues for having a large network because people can only endorse you if theyre first level connections. As always, you have to know what you want to accomplish by being on social media to make good decisions about how you manage your social media presence.Let’s Connect on LinkedInPlease don’t hesitate to invite me to connect on LinkedIn  here:  Donna Svei, Executive Resume Writer. New strategies to get a new job

New strategies to get a new job When you see someone who has a career you want, it’s a safe bet that they spent the majority of their career clearly defining themselves and then differentiating themselves from all the other people who defined themselves the same way. Self-knowledge is a huge career tool, but most people find it onerous and try to skip it. The problem with skipping over self-knowledge is that people hit a career ceiling, not because someone put it on top of them â€" we put it on top of ourselves by not knowing who we are. In order to differentiate yourself, you have to know what you don’t do well, and what you can do better than most people. This takes trying a lot of stuff (read: tons of failures) and it takes being wrong a million times (read: take public risks). 1. Forget about being smart. The first thing you should not be is smart. You know that great American idea that we are a meritocracy? Well, it’s true, except it’s not a meritocracy based on hard work, we’re a meritocracy for good social skills. We used to place high value on people who were walking Encyclopedias. Now we don’t need those sorts of people, and, in fact, they are weird. Their formerly very-useful ability to store data is relegated to parlor tricks now that we have computers. My favorite example of the cultural demise of the know-it-all is the infographic of dumbest editorial arguments on Wikipedia. The arguments are fueled by people who think they will somehow define themselves by their arcane knowledge. For instance, on the page for Andre the Giant, 3,766 edits have been made in a dispute about whether his height was 7’4” or 6’10”. The problem is that these people will be defined by their obsession with facts, but they will be defined as useless. 2. Create new ways for people to connect. The value people bring to the table today is social. We can see this in the reports from human resource departments across all industries about how emotional intelligence is key to hiring decisions. The shift toward valuing peoples’ ability to create community is evident in marketing departments (community manager is a hot job title right now) and in technology roles (Microsoft just revamped its review process to emphasize social skills among developers). One of the hottest trends in the art world is relational art. That is, art that changes the way people relate to each other in a given space. For example, did you notice the ping-pong table in the picture at the top of this post? Its sitting in an empty corridor of a parking lot. The artist, Laura Cashman, turns the parking lot into a place for people to play. The artist is not Leonardo da Vinci, but the Mona Lisa does very little in the way of creating a community of warmth and support. 3. Understand which commodities you add value to. Personality is how you decommodify a commodity. Like spam. Or porn. (It’s such a fine line, really.) Look at this writing by Patricia Lockwood. She makes tweets into poems about porn that smack of the rhythms of spam: Midnight. My wife and children are asleep. Breathlessly I begin to search for my favorite kind of porn: Women Standing in Big Jeans THE BIGGEST WOMEN IN THE TIGHTEST JEANS!!! U WONT BELIEVE YOUR EYES! THESE WOMEN SIMPLY CANT GET ENOUGH STANDING AROUND IN BIG JEANS! These jeansluts stand up really straight with their tits out, holding the jeans as far away from their bodies as possible! SO RAW This girl wants a denim vest, a denim scrunchie, and denim Keds are YOU the sicko whos going to give them to her Did you love those? We love them because they show us something we know in a new light.   Making a commodity personal brings pleasure to people who are bored with the commodity. 4. Be known for your ideas. This means you need to be okay being wrong. Being stupid. And being told you were wrong and stupid. You can’t be known for ideas if they are not new ideas. It’s really hard to think of a new idea. A lot of times an idea is so clearly true to me that I don’t recognize that it’s new. For example, when I tweeted about having a miscarriage in a board meeting, it was so clearly true to me that tons of women had already had miscarriages in the middle of meetings so it was right to talk about it. But it ended up that this was a new idea to a lot of people. On the other hand, sometimes I think I have a really new idea, like taking Adderall to get more work done, and it turns out it was only new to meGeneration Y had already done it to get through high school. So it’s clear that the only way you can tell if an idea is new is to tell it to people. It’s a good bet that if it sounds terrible to people then it’s a new idea. For example, Peter Moskos, associate professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice,  advocates that we stop putting people in prison and start flogging them. He argues that if you give people the choice between prison and flogging, most will choose flogging. Flogging doesn’t actually ruin your life. It just ruins a few moments. So how can we say that prison is not barbaric and flogging is? On top of this, we already know that prison is not a deterrent to crime, and prisons cost us way too much money. So prison is terrible and flogging solves almost all the problems of prison (except deterrence, but that’s another story.) This is a new, radical, persuasive argument to me. (And bonus:  his soon-to-be published book on flogging.) So I remember the guy’s name. Because he made a difference in how I think. I love him for that. 5. Face reality: this is the game you have to play. Getting a job is a popularity contest. It doesn’t get more personal than that. So paying attention to how people work around the commodification process is important. Theres a movement among economists and philosophers to should stop measuring a nation’s success as GNP and start measuring it in terms of collective wellbeing, or Gross National Happiness. I like this approach because on a micro level this means that you should stop fighting against a market that is not going your way. Offline journalism is a dead end. Being a novelist will not support your lifestyleeven if you are homeless. And you can’t expect to get a job as a 40 year old that a 20 year old can do. Just face the fact that 20 year olds are full of potential and promise and more fun to hire. The practice of shifting how you think to go with the flow is important. You need to focus on your happiness instead of the market. You cannot force the market to offer something it doesn’t have. And you cannot change yourself to fit the market. But you can look at what’s there. Look at what’s true. And be with it instead of fighting it. You’ll be surprised how much more effective you’ll be in all aspects of life if you play this game with yourself.

How to Clean Up Your LinkedIn Connections

How to Clean Up Your LinkedIn Connections I’ve been in recruitment a while, even back in the day before PCs and when CVs littered the halls like something from the movie Brazil. Recruiters hoarded paper like there was a war on, collaboration happened only at work nights out (do you get my drift?) and the CRM (which was only used by the massive team of CV administrators) was the old, flea-ridden dog in the corner. As the digital wave has swept over us, we have collected more and sourced harder. Our LinkedIn connections number on our profile is a badge of honour â€" new consultants stride towards the 500+ at speed! This is not sustainable or necessary. Why you should clean up your act (and connections): The algorithm in LinkedIn (people you may know, jobs your may be interested in, groups you may want to join etc…) â€" these “personal shoppers” rely on a clean and tidy contacts database to add value and give recruiters data which makes their day better. Recruiters and USPs?  I rarely see genuine USPs â€" but I do work with recruiters who have superb databases.   Data which is better than their clients’, candidates’ and competitors’ â€" this could be a great USP … “we know people”, “we can get to them quickly”… Speed â€" never before has speed been so high a priority for my clients.   It’s fair to say that many clients of the average agency recruiter want candidates, but they’ll settle for anyone who can do the job, and not necessarily wait for the best candidate.   This is reflected in typical case studies around recruiters competitors with numerous agencies for first past the post talent. There are 2 camps when it comes to the how to build your network: Connect with anything “in a skirt” and hope that when it gets to 3am and everyone’s gone home, there’s still a “unit” to score. (I worked in recruitment in the early 2000s and picked up some interesting language!) Be strategic â€" connect with people up and down the food chain in your industry (and the industry of your ideal talent and clients). (Guess which one I subscribe to!) So, if you agree that a clean and tidy database is one which is an asset, helps you do your job better and persuades your clients to get back to their desk and let the experts take care of the recruitment piece, then check out these 3 (free) ways of keeping your data clean. InMaps â€" check out this video, then run it for yourselves.   Don’t worry if it takes a little while (it can do) but it’s worth it.   You’ll see your network, you may even see randoms* that you rarely should “cull”.   I often run sessions and demo this and everyone coos like doves whilst seeing who they are really connected to.   Plus a great Ops Manager I know tells me he uses this to test the real value of a prospective employee’s network â€" Oh I love that! (Thanks for the tip Dave!)  Your LinkedIn Contact screen â€" study the “congrats” pane at the top.   Are there any randoms* in there?   You’ll see people’s birthdays, work anniversaries (look out for those lovely “I’ve been in my role 3 years â€" help me get out of here” contacts.   Look for “I’ve changed my role and forgotten to call you” contacts â€" bin or re-ignite. Bullhorn Reach â€" now step away from the “look how easy my job is â€" I press this job advert button and loads of money” button â€" and “reach” for the radar instead.   Surely you’d love to know when people appear to be getting itchy feet (Potential Movers”), or when they’ve been promoted / moved businesses (Recently Changed Jobs). Spend 5 mins a day on this and you’ll do a fabulous job of creating a database which pays you back every time you search it (and every time LinkedIn offers you people, groups and jobs).  Let’s also not forget that whilst you are doing this weeding, you may find hidden gems that you can re-engage with. It’s never been easier to collect people, and indeed remove people from your LinkedIn contacts â€" make sure you spend time developing the database you need, rather than simply scalp hunting. *Randoms defined: people you connected to when you’d probably had too much to drink at the club #BeerGoggles

4 simple diet changes to boost mood, wellbeing and productivity - Debut

4 simple diet changes to boost mood, wellbeing and productivity - Debut This post was written by an external contributor. Connor Gotto has some easy changes that you can make to your daily eating habits to help improve your studies.   Diet is so important. We hear it so much that we get tired of it, but its so true. Of course a healthy and balanced diet is imperative to maintain your body. However, what you put in also has a direct impact on what you get out of day-to-day life. Why? Pretty much everything we eat is converted by our bodies into glucose, which provides us with energy. There is, however, a difference in the rate that foods are broken down by the body, rendering some foods undesirable because, in spite of the wealth of energy they provide, they take far longer to digest, reducing oxygen levels to the brain and causing grogginess. Meanwhile, other foods have far more benefits to the body other than energy, believe it or not that render them far more desirable to get the most out of your day. So here are our four top suggestions for easy, healthy diet changes you can make to improve your mood and get the most out of your day. Cut down on  bread If you’re anything like us, you’ll wake up craving carbs and go to bed planning what your next hit of carbs is going to be its only natural (or so we tell ourselves). Now, we’re not anti-carbs at all. But were guilty of just grabbing some for a quick fix and often regretting it twenty minutes later. Fibre is essential for digestion, and unfortunately two slices of white bread contain only 1g of it. The primary nutrient is starch, giving a decent 20g hit. However, this is also commonly found in cereal, rice, and potatoes. Therefore, bread has very little health benefits, serving mainly to hinder digestion. To our surprise, cutting bread from our diet wasn’t as horrifying as we first thought. Yes, we still crave it every time we pass a bakery, but the alternatives are plentiful, and make for easy substitutes. Our favourite: Ryvita! Not only is it far healthier and packed with seeds and grains, it also gives a good crunch. Trust us, try it and you’ll see just how much better life is without ‘carb-head’. Try alternatives to cows milk No one wants dry cornflakes, we all agree on that. But the type and amount of milk that we use can render a bowl of even the healthiest cereal high in calories. Many believe that cow’s milk is high in calcium we’ve all been told its “good for your bones” but, in reality, studies have shown that the calcium absorbed in cow’s milk isnt as high as we may think.  It’s also reasonably high in calories, the majority of which come from fat. All in all, its not the best. Nowadays, there’s a variety of alternative milk options that have lots of health benefits. Soy and nut milks are especially among the most popular in the UK. Unsweetened soy milk is packed with protein, calcium and nutrients that will nourish your body and mind, helping you to remain focused for your studies. So, next time you sigh at someone ordering a flat white with almond milk at Starbucks, think again… Make your own soup A go-to lunch option for many of us, soup is often praised as the much healthier alternative to the sandwich. However, what is often not discussed is the high salt and fat content, rendering some shop-bought soups worse for you than a sandwich and bag of crisps. The answer: make your own. It’s healthier, and cheaper! Our current go-to is root vegetable: carrot, parsnip, swede, and onion. You can buy all together in Sainsburys for £1. Simply chop and boil, blend if you like, and throw in a stock cube for good measure. Total cost: £1.10, or 27.5p per serving. Pair with Ryvita or rice cakes for a lunch that is not only delicious, but packed with nutrients and sure to keep your mind fueled for the remainder of the afternoon. Swap the coffee for herbal tea We’re all too quick to wake up and grab a coffee, depending on it to ‘rev up our engines’ and get on with the day. Apart from that however, it does very little for us. Especially when loaded with milk and sugar. Luckily, there are a plethora of fruit and herbal teas to choose from instead. Teas that will give you a more natural energy boost and countless other benefits. For example, green tea is a superfood and helps to fill you up. Sip on it while working and you’ll not be distracted by thoughts of your next naughty snack break. Herbal teas are also great at staving off colds, and also support restful sleep which, as we all know is imperative to maintain focus and remain productive. Try it you’ll miss your usual coffee for the first few days, but you’ll soon find your favourite (and spend a whole lot less on £4 a pop takeout coffees…) Connect with Debut on  Facebook,  Twitter,  and  LinkedIn  for more careers insights.

Maximizing Interview Chemistry Connection - Part 1 - Hire Imaging

Maximizing Interview Chemistry Connection - Part 1 - Hire Imaging I was talking to a friend recently, who was floating on Cloud Nine. She had met a man and in her words, “It was magic! It was love at first sight!” This couple had, as some would say, chemistry. Interview Chemistry: What is It? One of the statements I hear from clients after not getting an offer is, “I don’t know why I didn’t get the job. I thought we had great chemistry.” But did they? Interviews are not just conversations. Unfortunately, too often job candidates think of interviews as just that â€" sessions where they sit back and answer questions. An interview is like a sports competition. No two are the same; you can’t plan exactly how things will go, but you can have a game plan for coming out well. The point is to make the most out of the interview; and to come out better than the competition, whom we will assume, are as qualified as you are. In the interview, both sides are asking, “Do I like this person? Will I enjoy working with this person?” As a job candidate, your primary goal in the interview is to convince the employer that you want to work for them, and only them. Here are two first steps to help you build chemistry with everyone you meet in an interview situation. For interview coaching and practice to help you establish the kind of chemistry and connection you want in an interview, let me help. Interview Chemistry: First 2 Steps Research each company or firm. How do you feel when you meet a person for the first time who knows a lot about you? It usually catches people off guard in a pleasant way. It creates a very positive first impression. It is often the basis on which successful businesses are shaped.     An accountant friend of mine attributes his success to research he does ahead of time. His clients repeatedly tell him that he won their business against stiff competition, because he knew more about them than anyone else! If you make the effort to know the employer organization’s website, their press, their industry, their competition and even the person or persons you will be meeting, this ignites a bond.       Amaze the front lines. When you arrange or confirm the interview appointment, this is a great opportunity to collect more data. Many of my clients have gathered job descriptions, brochures and other enlightening informationâ€"simply by asking.     One study showed that two-thirds of hiring managers said that they were heavily influenced by their right-hand administrative support person or team. Interview Chemistry: In Practice My executive client, George once shared with me a personal example of this power. He had a 1:30 appointment to interview Mr. X. When Mr. X showed up, George had completely forgotten about the appointment. It was also a busy day. George asked his Executive Assistant, “Marge, what do you think of him?” Marge said not one word; she simply gave a thumbs-down signal. Mr. X had apparently droned on about himself in the waiting room, which greatly irritated Marge who had work to do. Short story: Mr. X was relegated to interviewing with an assistant. And Marge was instructed by George to provide her opinion to this assistant. Mr. X was history. No one had taught him how important it is to make a positive impression on the front office staff. Simple things like arriving just a tad early, being organized, not talking on your cell, or simply smiling and saying “thanks” to the receptionist! Without chemistry and connection in an interview, it’s an uphill battle. In Part 2, I’ll share two more steps to creating interview connection with chemistry. Most conversations are simply monologues delivered in the presence of a witness.” ~ Margaret Miller Photo:   tedmurphy
